Hello Friends and Neighbors,
We’re a bit late in getting this word out, but mostly because we’re still glowing from last month’s screening of Rock Bottom Riser. So many of you showed up and made it a standing-room-only event, and stayed for the discussion with director Fern Silva. It really warms our hearts to see and feel everyone taking part in cinematic experiences, which can be more than just imbibing some good photons. So much more can be found in the exchange. Thank you to all who came and exchanged ideas, questions, food, and long takes of Hawaiian sunsets.
Our next screenings are next week!
First up, we have Bruce Lee and the Outlaw by Joost Vandebrug. Shot over six years in Bucharest, Romania, the film follows Nicu (the Outlaw), an orphan boy living undergound, under the protection of a cryptic father figure who paints himself in silver stove paint and calls himself Bruce Lee. Not for the faint of heart! We’re always looking to connect filmmakers and viewers in direct ways, and for this one, we are excited to say that all proceeds will be sent as donations to the participants in the film.
It’ll be a quick turnaround to the next filmic experience, and this one is not to be missed. We’re bringing the international film festival called The Flaherty up from NYC and right into our backyard.
Usually reserved for the elite aesthetes of cinema, we felt it right to share and democritize this truly unique gathering. The main thesis of the Flaherty is no preconception - you don’t know what you’re going to see before you see it. Then, after each program of shorts, the audience discusses at length. The second part of this model is a huge inspiration for our little series, so it’s an honor to be able to parlay the programming from the main event up to the capital region. And we’re partnering with The Tang Teaching Museum and The Sanctuary for Independent Media to do it. So, for a three day fest, we’ve got three locations.
It’s always a quivering collection of brand-spanking-new experimental work. Prepare to have your edges pushed, your palates cleansed, expanded, repulsed, etc. and your brains worked! We don’t know what’s going to be screened, and we’d love to discover it all with you.
Friday the 27th, 2pm: The Tang Museum: Program 1
Saturday the 28th, 3 & 6pm: Picture Lock One: Programs 2 & 3
Sunday the 29th, 11am & 2pm: The Sanctuary for Independent Media: Programs 4 & 5
You can show up to any one of these programs, OR, if you want to have the fullest possible experience, please write back to us right here and register for the whole thing. That way, we’ll know who’s coming, and we might provide you with a little bagged lunch as well ;)
OK, One more thing! Our next themed season is called Sweat Equity, which we’ll explain in person, but you probably get the gist already - it’s about labor, and also it’s going to be hot.
We’re going to be hosting a free screening of the famously sweaty Do the Right Thing on July 24th to kick it off, and then are inviting you to put your images up on the screen to share with all of us. Our Open Screen will be on July 25th, for Troy Night Out. That’s right, you can boast to your friends that you have work on display for the big bright art night around town. You could, if you wanted to, respond directly to what you see at the Flaherty…
We want to see what you’ve made, what you’re making, and what you haven’t even made yet! Anything you feel like sharing, we want to see it. 10 min or shorter. You can submit work to us here with a link to vimeo, youtube, dropbox, wetranfser etc. etc. and we’ll put in the playlist. We can support 16mm, VHS, DVD, and digital. If you know someone who might have something to screen, please send them this invite.
To recap:
Wednesday, June 25th: Bruce Lee and the Outlaw
June 27th-29th: The Flaherty Film Seminar
July 24th: Do The Right Thing
July 25th: Open Screen
That’s it for now (that’s a lot).
